Sandborn Fire Insurance Maps of Traverse City

City Directories & Plat Books

 City directories for Grand Traverse and Leelanau Counties.  Residents listed by name and address.  Sometimes shows  occupation and children’s names. 

Plat Books are maps of an area that show who owned the land.   The library has the most recent plat books for surrounding counties in the reference collection (G 1413) and old ones in storage.  Ask a librarian to retrieve them for you.

Traverse City Record Eagle Archive

Covers the years 1858-1977, 1988-1989, and 2009-2012.  (Any years not covered are available on microfilm.)

Use the dropdown menu to access the advanced search on Google News to search for old newspaper articles from a certain town.  Type the town name and state in the "exact phrase" box and search by "specified date." A range of years works best, e.g. 1940 to 1945.
