Browsing by Genre

You can browse the library shelves (call number PZ) for the genre of your choice.  Look for these labels on the spine of picture and chapter books to identify the genre:

Once you have executed a search for one of the above genres, be sure to narrow your results to books in the Children's Literature category, as you will most likely find a mixture of children's and adult books.

You can narrow your search to Children's Literature books after entering a search term.  Click on "Children's Literature" in the "You found titles in categories" box on the right side of the search screen. 

Children's Literature Collections @ NMC

You'll find Children's Literature in several sections in the library:

  1. Reserve Books: titles put on reserve by professors.  Located at the Library Reference Desk, these include reserve titles for MATH and ENG 210.
  2. Stack Collection: the main children's literature collection, under the call number PZ. Chapter books (3-week checkout) and picture books (1-week checkout) are shelved separately here.
  3. Children's Book Cart: contains books for young library visitors. Materials are near the print journal collection on the main level. These books do not check out. 
  4. Big Books: oversized picture books for group storytelling use and may be checked out for one week at a time.  Big Books are located on a cart next to the Children's Book Cart.

Search Area Libraries

NMC Osterlin Library owns a small, core collection of children's books. To truly see the wealth and diversity of children's books available, visit a local public library's children's department!
