Finding Search Terms Based on Your Research Question

An example based on a patient you worked with...

  • The patient's diagnosis (example: heart failure)
  • A treatment  or procedure the patient had. (example: insertion of a left ventricular assist device)
  • Are there nursing protocols for care? (example: ambulation)
  • What lifestyle choices might you need to educate the patient on? (example: exercise)

Or start with an important issue in healthcare today...

  • Issue: opioid addiction
  • What population are you focusing on? (example: recreational users)
  • What are you concerned about? (example: nursing care)

In textbooks or STAT!Ref books, search on the broader terms (example: heart failure)

In article databases use narrower terms. Example for CINAHL & HealthSource: ambulation and assist device

Sources for Evidence-Based Practice Papers

Search in STAT!Ref nursing books.  "Medical-Surgical Nursing: Clinical Reasoning on Patient Care" has lots of information on treatment of diseases.  And "Lippincott's Nursing Procedures" and "Lippincott's Manual of Nursing Practice" have information on the related nursing care and protocols.

For articles, start with the link to CINAHL and HealthSource: Nursing/Academic. Start by searching on the condition you're researching and add terms related to your goal (disease treatment, prevention.  Example: kidney disease and treatment
