Literary Criticism: The Basics

Studying

Literary criticism refers to the process of defining, classifying, analyzing, interpreting, and evaluating pieces of literature with the purpose of understanding and appreciating them more fully.

There are many different forms of literary criticism: archetypal, historical, feminist, formal, marxist, multicultural, psychoanalytical and textual. Along with examining the text, literary criticism generally includes investigating the author, learning their background, interests and other information relevant to their work.
